Successful Start of the New Internal Event Series IE2S REFLECT
Shaping the Future: IE2S REFLECT launches with Inspiring Perspectives
On 3 July 2025, IE2S proudly launched its brand‑new internal event series, REFLECT – a platform created to spark dialogue, broaden horizons, and ignite fresh ideas. Designed as a space for open exchange, REFLECT invites thought‑provoking conversations with external guests, offering valuable insights into future‑shaping trends, cross‑industry challenges, and innovative solutions.
We were honoured to begin this journey with Dr Claudia Mangold, Head of Business Development and Management of Critical Infrastructure and Customers at EnBW, who brought a wealth of expertise and a forward‑looking vision to our first session. Her perspectives set the tone for the inspiring discussions and discoveries that lie ahead.

Insights and Suggestions for tomorrow's Energy Infrastructure
In her keynote address, Dr Claudia Mangold presented the key insights from EnBW’s latest system cost study. The emphasis was on designing an energy infrastructure that is future‑proof, economical, and sustainable. Central to the discussion were cost‑optimisation strategies and the challenge of planning infrastructure effectively while maintaining supply security, cost‑efficiency, and sustainability.
Drawing on the study’s findings, Dr Mangold proposed several measures: capping the offshore wind expansion target at a maximum of 55 GW, or 45 GW should demand decrease; revising the photovoltaic expansion target downwards to 140–150 GW; and reducing the electrolysis capacity target by 40 GW. Additionally, she advocated promoting gas and hydrogen power plants in consumer centres, and recognising blue hydrogen from diversified sources as a low‑carbon solution. She recommended that projected electricity demand for 2045 should be adjusted downwards. According to the system cost study, implementing these measures would result in a lower‑cost transformation of the energy system.

Engaging Perspectives in Dialogue
Following the keynote, the conversation came alive under the guidance of Dr‑Ing. Sebastian Bothor and Nicole Dötterer, who skilfully steered an in‑depth exchange with the audience. Adding further expertise to the discussion, Dr Felix Teufel, Senior Manager of Business Development and Sales / E‑Mobility Management at EnBW, shared valuable insights from his field.
The dialogue delved into the pressing challenges of electromobility, exploring practical and forward‑looking solutions. In particular, the discussion shed light on its far‑reaching implications for grid infrastructure – from capacity management to integration strategies – sparking thought‑provoking perspectives among participants.

"Our goal with REFLECT is to showcase a range of perspectives. In doing so, we create space for ideas that can help us progress – both in our everyday work and in shaping the future.”
Refreshing Networking to Conclude
The event drew to a close with a relaxed networking session over cool drinks and ice cream, offering the perfect setting for in‑depth conversations. Our sincere thanks go to Dr Claudia Mangold and Dr Felix Teufel for their valuable insights, and to all participants for their keen interest and active engagement. We are already looking forward to the next editions of REFLECT, bringing more inspiring guests and fresh impulses for the future. Stay tuned!
